Why are the lights Flickr’ing?!

Have you ever flickr’d? I know I have not, nor did I hear that much about it. While reading the Web 2.0 case study by Andrew M. Cox on flickr, I learned that flickr is a place where you can upload photos to share your artistic side. What was interesting to me was that flickr had 27 million users and only 4 million photos in 2005 before it was bought by Yahoo! In 2006, an additional 3 million users joined and there was a total of 130 million photos on Flickr. It is like Yahoo’s name and brand helped it get more users that were a lot more active in posting photos. Flickr illustrated a Web2.0 concept by having user generated content or UGC, which also includes tagging. I think Flickr would be beneficial to a lot of bloggers if it is used as storage space for their photos. Comments are a big interaction component for Flickr because that is how the users communicate and give or receive feedback. There are different ways to explore on Flickr; by photos of others you follow, your favorites, via groups, or through searching. Since I am a Pinterest junkie, in a way, this really reminds me of Pinterest in a sense how it is set up minus Pinterest hosting a different website through their “photos.” Flickr is a host for amateur photographers and others that are wanting to express their artistic side. The rise in popularity of digital imaging took over film camera sales and now we have all kinds of social media websites like Flickr or Instagram. I personally LOVE my instagram account and use it for inspiration, advice, make-up reviews, and daily life updates in picture form. I really enjoy looking through other people’s eyes and minds and follow people I share common interests with. I usually don’t follow people back right away unless they interact with me after I approve their request. Flickr has one up on Instagram because it is a photo AND video hosting site, which makes it more popular. Flickr also shares a creative commons license allowing a flexible range of protections and freedoms for authors, artists, and educators. When Flickr was bough out by Yahoo! it took the place of Yahoo! Photos. Yahoo! Photos had unlimited storage space but it was required that all photos be jpeg/jpg extension. Flickr offers two types of accounts, Free and Pro. Pro accounts allow users to upload an unlimited number of images and videos every month and receive unlimited bandwidth and storage. Photos may be placed in up to 60 group pools, and Pro account users receive ad-free browsing and have access to account statistics. As soon as a Pro account expires, it reverts to the restrictions of a free account, including Flickr’s right to delete an account that is “inactive for 90 consecutive days”. Flickr may delete a Pro account without giving any reason nor warning to the account’s owner. Flickr does provide both private and public storage for users.

1) I have three different fonts on my WP blog. The blogs name is in a BOLD font, the titles are in a type writer style font and the bodies look different as well.

3) A font is the actual digital file or description to the COMPUTER which makes the computer able to tell what font to print it in. A font is one weight, width, and style of a typeface. A typeface is a design of the alphabet and the shape of the letters that make up a style. I.e. “arial” or “times new roman”.

4) For a personal site I would use the fonts off http://www.sparknotes.com/ For a more professional look I would go with http://www.joeyrestaurants.com/location/bellevue The difference between these two font styles is that the personal site is more laid back and has a cartoon-ish font and is less serious while the business site is more print-style and easy to read. It is more serious and plain and doesn’t show any style.

Week 7 Assignment

I commented on Ava’s project (http://wp.me/p26IcC-I) and was really interested to see the finished product because we all (or most of us!) were blogging virgins before this class. I think this is a great way to do a final project because there is a personal experience factor involved. This made me realize that I could also incorporate our class readings and information we received from discussion leaders into my own project.

I also read Kort’s project post and was really amazed at his dedication to portray other people’s stories and struggles to us so we can put ourselves in their shoes. (http://wp.me/p26I9V-c) I think this will be a great way to bring awareness to us since we are all a paycheck away from being homeless as Kort states. I think this made me think of looking at both sides of the story (social media networks and the users) for my own project.

I liked John’s project idea because it can be used in future job hunt’s and he can always add to it or update it as he gets further in his graphic designing. (http://wp.me/pBwJs-r )
I think this may help me focus on making my project into something I could submit to future job openings as a sample of my work whether it is presenting in front of a camera or creating an animated video.

A New Outlook on Twitter!

I had made a Twitter account YEARS ago, logged in a few times, forgot login info and password. Once I started up with this class and other COM classes I realized how Twitter can be utilized in a meaningful manner besides just stating opinions or how you feel, etc. I made a new account and am trying to get used to it by logging in more frequently. I realized that nearly everyone has Twitter. From Starbucks to Mit Romney to Rihanna! Since taking this class, I realized that Twitter is also used for breaking news coverage! Anyone can tweet news and it spreads like wildfire.

I could incorporate Twitter in my project by asking my followers questions about their online privacy settings and getting a feedback from actual social media network users.

The Final Stage of Online Privacy

So since I am only going to be doing a 3-4 minute video, I wanted to concentrate on a question that was really relevant to me.

My Online Privacy Project will be surrounding the question: “What Internet activities reveal my personal information?” The purpose of my video will be to make others aware as this class has made me, that we have a right, and that is to protect our information and have some privacy online (or as much as possible!). I will go into a few ways our information is being accessed and what it is used for, as well as how to stay as safe as possible online!

Once I have completed my “speech” with information used from the sources mentioned below, I will make a video (either in person, or a simulated video!) I would think the “preparation” of completing enough research and writing out what I will say will take a few hours. To make the video will be interesting since I have never made one of myself of simulated one online. I am not sure how long this all will take me. I will be working on this project during this weekend and hope to complete it (for the most part!) by Monday.

I found that this site had various information about how things could possibly reveal your personal information and leads it to detailed information about internet browsing, blogs, making online payments, emails, list serves, and the simple act of signing up for internet service.

I wanted to specifically focus on social networking websites (because there are so many users, and a lot that are just plain CLUELESS) and how they reveal personal information and in what way the personal information is being used. This site reveal some tips on HOW to actually protect your information online, teach your kids about protecting their information, making sure no one gains access to your bank account while making online purchases, as well as instructions on how to REMOVE information from sites and how to prevent anyone gaining access to your information.

I will feel like my project was a success if I get comments on it saying “WOW, you sure made me aware of things I wasn’t aware of before!” or have someone double check the privacy rights of the social media networking they are using after watching my video. I just want people to be MORE aware than they were before.

It seems like people were migrating from MySpace to Facebook about 5 years ago, and NOW it seems as if that trend is reversing. Facebook keeps making changes to their layout and privacy setting since they first started in 2004, which makes it hard for those that want COMPLETE privacy from strangers to keep it that way. Just imagine that you have everything set to private, or so you thought, just to find out that Facebook has recently changed their default settings for privacy to be viewable to all users. How would you find that out? Well unless you read about it or check your settings every time you log onto Facebook, you wouldn’t! I find that possibility real scary because I have pictures and videos of my children on my Facebook so my family that is overseas can have a way to see them growing up, but now I am reconsidering just sending those to all my family members via email instead.

Facebook originally was started by students at Harvard to be able to communicate and socialize between the Harvard Network. It quickly grew popular and was made available to the general public. With a few changes and improvements, it grew as a social networking trend. With that being said, people could have thousands of “friends” and keep up with them by logging in once a day and scrolling through the news feed. Although I did not mind the news feed feature, because I AM nosey, a lot of other Facebookers DID protest against it by starting a Facebook group called “Students Against Facebook News Feed.” About 700,000 students were protesting against information like your relationship status, and who you added as a friend to be only viewable when someone visits your actual page instead of broadcasting that you are filing for divorce to Facebook land. Let’s face it, with all this social networking, a lot of people have family, friends, and even co-workers on their Facebook’s which makes it a little TMI for a business relationship. Another thing that was a flawed feature was that people can “tag” you, or a picture of you, and it would be viewable to all of Facebook land (or your friends if you were on “private”) before you could even “approve” the picture. I think there is a better name for that, BLACKMAIL! Even if you “un-tagged” yourself, they can “tag” you again and again! (evil friends!) But now that feature has been approved where you are able to actually put a limit to “tagging” and you can review anything people tag you in before it gets posted to your profile and appears on your friends’ news feeds.

The newest feature that is being introduced to Facebook, and yes it is “mandatory”, is called a timeline. Timelines display a “story” to your friends through years, and with pictures. You are also able to put a banner of your choice (again, so MySpace -like) at the top of your profile. It makes it rather juvenile in my opinion. I admired Facebook for its simplicity in the layout and use. Not so much anymore. It is rumored that if you have not updated to the Facebook timeline yet, it will be done automatically for you in “the next few weeks.” I am not a fan of change, especially when I have no control over it.
